CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — 

Work on the berth expansion at Port Charlottetown has resumed after an initial work stoppage due to the pandemic.

Currently, only one ship can dock at a time but this work will allow two 330-metre ships to dock simultaneously.

A crane on a barge has been driving piles into the seabed so ships can tie up. There will be 43 of them. There will also be two mooring buoys to tie up the vessels further out and three breasting dolphins, which help berth the ships.

Corryn Clemence, cruise development, communications and brand manager for Port Charlottetown said some of the crew working on the project are from off-Island but the work is deemed essential or approved construction to continue, adding that whatever screening or protocols public health has in place for these workers would have been followed.

As for the cruise ship season, Clemence said with the announcements of cancellations from Holland America, Princess and Seabourn, as it stands now there are no ships due to arrive in Charlottetown until early September.

Construction on the new berth should be completed this fall.
